Are you searching for information on teaching English abroad? Are you considering taking a TEFL course? Well, whether you take a course online or in-class there are some tricks that you might want to know about.

These are common in TEFL and they are often used by a number of course providers. A few were even used on me.

I made this video to make you more aware of the shady marketing out there. Much of it is deceptive to varying degrees.

Timestamps & article below:

  • Lies about the requirements to teach in Korea & Taiwan: 00:27
  • Company says their certificate is required to teach in China 05:08
  • Massive “discounts” 06:35
  • Sales and time limited offers 07:40
  • So-called “120, 160 hour courses” 08:40
  • Beaches in Thailand 10:30
  • “Internationally recognized” TEFL certification 12:54
  • CELTA lies 17:13
  • Teach anywhere in the world 20:21

UPDATE: They try to trick you with fake reviews

There’s a lot of fake reviews out there. You knew 2,000,000+ on Amazon right? Well, TEFL is no different and in fact there are entire review sites (that claim to be “trusted” that write fake reviews, use fake usernames, have fake awards, etc.

Lots of deception cause it’s easy to do online.

Fake reviews can be positive or negative

Negative?

Yes, competitors will write fake negative reviews on their competition usually using an anonymous or fake account.

I’ve had it happen to me. TEFL trolls.

One of those trolls calls themselves “Mia Williams” of “trusted” TEFL reviews.

Mia Williams is a fake name

I can tell you “she” is a he and his real name is Neville David Thomas and he has had review site scams before one called ITTP. TEFL online pro is his current site too.

You can search for:
