Are you looking for an English teacher training book? Are you teaching mostly children?

If both of your answers are “yes” then let me introduce to you this time saving guide to TEFL.

The Lazy Teacher’s Guide To TEFL

Here’s a little background:

I remember when I first got into TEFL. I was in denial and thought I wasn’t a teacher. I was pretty sure that I wouldn’t actually do it.

I thought to myself, I was an artist not a teacher. However, I wanted to travel and live abroad.

So eventually I found myself on a plane to Taiwan to teach English.

I started off teaching as a substitute — I got my feet wet slowly and then eventually found a job that gave me a visa like I needed.

And teaching was difficult.

Man, I would spend like an hour and a half trying to prepare for 3 hours of teaching.

You’d think that with all that time I could have prepared a pretty good class, but no!

They still sucked.

In fact they sucked for a while. My first year+ was difficult. Meanwhile I had a friend from college who was also teaching in Taiwan. He went there a few years before I did.

He was like a pro or so I thought. I asked him how long it took him to prepare his lessons and he was like a few minutes. A few minutes?!

I was impressed.

So that became my goal and eventually that’s what happened. I was able to pretty much just look at the book and come up with some ideas for a class in a couple of minutes.

How?

Well, with time I learned the tools of the trade, activities that were efficient, some teaching structure and classroom management.

And I wrote a guide on how you can do that too.

This is a simplified, less is more guide to teaching ESL with a bit more of a focus on teaching children. It’s not a comprehensive guide to teaching abroad nor is it like a TEFL course.

But in some sense it’s like a mini ultra-effective TEFL course. Before I went to Taiwan I took a TEFL course for a $1000 and it didn’t come close to preparing me for a few reasons.

It wasn’t practical or geared towards the students I taught.

You won’t learn useless stuff like grammar or teaching theory. You’ll learn really practical tools that work!

It is basic and it will teach you how you too can save time and quickly prepare effective lessons.
