This course to teach English abroad is NOT for people who just want to get a job or “check the box”

Are you living outside of the box or are you in it?

This is what the TEFL course box looks like:

It’s all a bunch of B.S. to give you a peace of mind because you are a scared neub. But you are not going on vacation. You are going abroad to teach.

Why do you want to take a TEFL course? Is it because you want a job, a better job or to make more money?

Well…

It can depend on the school, but based on my experience teaching and living in China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan I’d say…

It’s not always required, it’s unlikely to get you a better job and it’s not very likely to make you more money.

So why take a TEFL course?

There are 2 basic reasons why people take courses.

  1. To get a job.
  2. To learn.

Some schools may require TEFL certification. But taking a course to get a job or “check the box” is the wrong reason to take a course. And if that is all you want to do then you can do that on Groupon for $8 last I knew.

Why is it the wrong reason?

Because then you are in it for proof. You are in it so that you can get a piece of paper that makes it LOOK LIKE YOU KNOW SOMETHING.

It’s superficial.

In fact it’s not only degrees TEFL certificates, it’s also accreditation, so-called course “hours” or any course that claims to be “internationally recognized” and more on those things later in the FAQ, but…

They are all JUST FOR SHOW.

Also getting a job isn’t actually the end it’s just the beginning.

THE BEST REASON TO TAKE A COURSE IS TO LEARN.

It’s about the process and not the end.

Getting a job is a short term solution, but then what? You will have at least a year ahead of you. If you just want a job then you are just focused on the end — the carrot or the certificate if you will.

It’s not fulfilling and it’s not going to make you a better teacher and you are not going to have a better year because of it.

“Don’t do it for proof, do it because the learning itself is worth it.” — Seth Godin

So what’s the course?

It’s called TEKA.
